About Us

Members of the Port Macquarie and Districts Family History Society Inc. are passionate, committed family historians and genealogists who enthusiastically promote the study and recording of family history. We believe in family history being "fun" and come together in meetings, seminars, support groups and social events to assist, advise and support each other in discovering and recording our ancestral connections.

Our History:
In 1985, a public meeting was held with representatives of Hastings Municipal Library, Hastings Genealogical Advisory Service and other interested people with a view to starting a local family history group.

Originally called the Mid North Coast Family History Group, with 43 financial members, it held its first meeting in July 1985. In February 1987, the name was changed to Hastings Valley Family History Group Inc. In December 1998 it changed to Port Macquarie & Districts Family History Society Inc.

The Society's Constitution is available by clicking on the following link: Constitution. (pdf 212kb, updated 2022)

In 1985 the first major project for the society was to record the headstones of the Port Macquarie General Cemetery which had recently closed.  Eventually, under the banner of the Australian Bicentennial Project in 1988, the information was produced on fiche.  Since then, many publications have been produced and projects undertaken by the many volunteers from the society.  Please visit our publications page for more information.

The Society meets on the 2nd Saturday of every month (except January) in the:
